Excavation from Charteris Bay Quarry
Processing and Cutting
Hand Carving Coping Stones
Installation with Seismic Stone Ties
Our 14 tonne excavator with rock breaker and screening bucket provides the power and efficiency to extract and process
clean rock ready to be cut in one of our mobile guillotines. Having this equipment available greatly reduces our man hours needed to process stone, therefore reducing the cost of the entire installation.
Southern Stonemasons Canterbury own several small rock quarries in the South Island and manage the Charteris Bay Sandstone quarry at Orton Bradley Park. In supplying our own stone we can often greatly reduce the costs by cutting out the middle man.
In the last 20 years we have been engaged to extract and process rock on a wide range of sites around the South Island. From thousands of meters of heritage stone works on major council projects (including the Lyttelton-Sumner Road walls) to farm/land owners wanting to build with their own stone on their property.
You will find many such examples in our Featured Projects.
The best and most solid stone is in the bedrock. To access this stone an excavator and other specialist quarry equipment is required.
Often the only choice a stonemason will get is to visit a quarry and 'hand select' stones for their projects. This stone is surface rubble and does not have the same integrity as bedrock stone. It is generally fragile because it is high in imperfections and this can show in stonework.
Extracting large blocks of quarry stone gives us clean canvases to work with. When our stonemasons hand chisel a stone it is a matter of a few well directed strikes when they're not working with weaker rubble. This saves time and makes for a clean and tidy job site with minimum wastage.
Having the ability access quality quarry rock means we can offer better stone to our clients at cheaper costs.
